NLMK DanSteel, Denmark (part of the Novolipetsk Steel, NLMK Group) supplied a thick-gage plate for the Wind Float Atlantic project, the world’s first semi-submersible floating wind farm (WPP) off the northern coast of Portugal.
NLMK DanSteel’s high quality steel is used for floating platforms and support towers.
The Wind Float Atlantic wind farm includes three 8.4 MW wind turbines each, installed on floating platforms. As the third turbine was installed in July 2020, the park is now be fully operational. The generated energy will be enough to power 60,000 houses in Portugal. The project will help reduce CO2 emissions by almost 1.1 million tons per year.
To participate in such innovative offshore projects, NLMK DanSteel has improved its manufacturing process and developed a special steel chemical composition with increased fracture resistance under high dynamic and static loads at low temperatures. Together with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the plant has gained certification for the product.
