The topics announced for discussion at SPIEF’2022 show that the green agenda, the principles of sustainable development and the energy transition continue holding relevance to the Russian economy.

A look at the programme for the XXV St Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will be held in St Petersburg on 15-18 June 2022, shows this.

The theme of SPIEF’2022 sounds audaciously: “A New World [brings] New Opportunities.” Within the forum’s first track, “The New Economic Order: Meeting the Challenges of the Times”, topics related in one way or another to renewable energy and decarbonisation feature prominently among the announced topics for discussion:

  • World Energy Outlook 2050: Transformation for Sustainable Development;
  • When will coal become ‘green’?
  • Towards a sustainable future: “A ‘green’ alternative to conventional fuels;
  • International Carbon Trade: Russia’s Potential;
  • Economics and the ECE’s Climate Agenda.

One of the topics of the second track of SPIEF’2022 “Russia’s Economy: New Challenges and Horizons” is also dedicated to the energy transition: “Hydrogen Energy: A Cluster Approach.”

Recall that at the end of March, SPIEF’2022 organisers announced that representatives from 69 countries, including the US, the UK, Germany and China, had confirmed participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2022.
